It looks all too familiar.  Before text messaging was popular and GeoCities was the closest thing to a social networking site, everyone was on AOL Instant Messenger.  It was how everyone communicated with one another and successfully were able to maintain several conversations at once.  In addition, it made sending pictures and sounds easy and nearly instantaneous.  Most importantly, it made it possible to make up a fake persona and carry on a conversation with a complete stranger (that also happened to be a hott lesbian 36DD-24-36 23/f/miami).  But all that common anonymity disappeared with the rise in popularity (and decline in cost) of the cellular phone.
